چکیده
Abstract The main hurdle in instrumentalizing agricultural soils to sequester atmospheric carbon is the development of methods measure soil stocks which are robust, scalable, and widely applicable. Our objective develop an approach that can help overcome these hurdles. In this paper, we present Wageningen Soil Carbon STOck pRotocol (SoilCASTOR). SoilCASTOR uses a novel fusing satellite data, direct proximal sensing-based measurements, machine learning yield stock estimates. method has been tested applied USA on fields with land use. Results show estimates precise repeatable could be rapidly scalable. precision farm C below 5% enabling detection organic changes desired for 4 per 1000 initiative. assessment done robustly as few 0.5 sample hectare farms varying from 20 150 hectares. These findings enable structural implementation farming.

The Effect of Land use and Soil Erosion on Soil Organic Carbon and Nitrogen Stock
Soil organic carbon (SOC) is a principal component in soil quality assessment. Knowledge of SOC and total nitrogen (TN) stocks are important keys to understand the role of SOC in the global carbon cycle and, as a result, in the mitigation of global greenhouse effects. SOC and TN stocks are functions of the SOC concentration and the bulk density of the soil that are prone to changes, influe...

Soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics are regulated by the complex interplay of climatic, edaphic and biotic conditions. However, the interrelation of SOC and these drivers and their potential connection networks are rarely assessed quantitatively. Using observations of SOC dynamics with detailed soil properties from 90 field trials at 28 sites under different agroecosystems across the Australian ...
متن کاملPyrogenic Carbon Erosion: Implications for Stock and Persistence of Pyrogenic Carbon in Soil
Pyrogenic carbon (PyC) constitutes an important pool of soil organic matter (SOM), particularly for its reactivity and because of its assumed long residence times in soil. In the past, research on the dynamics of PyC in the soil system has focused on quantifying stock and mean residence time (MRT) of PyC in soil, as well as determining both PyC stabilization mechanisms and loss pathways. Much o...

It has been suggested that conversion to organic farming contributes to soil carbon sequestration, but until now a comprehensive quantitative assessment has been lacking. Therefore, datasets from 74 studies from pairwise comparisons of organic vs. nonorganic farming systems were subjected to metaanalysis to identify differences in soil organic carbon (SOC). We found significant differences and ...

As the repository for more than three-fourths of the earth’s terrestrial C, soils store 4.5 times the amount of C contained in vegetation (Lal 2004). Small changes in the processes governing soil C cycling have the potential to...
